The National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat), in cooperation with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), held a presentation of the roadmap for the creation of a population register.
The roadmap was developed jointly by Geostat and UNFPA, including with the active involvement of an international expert invited by UNFPA. As part of the working process, administrative databases were analysed, and the quality, interoperability and integration potential of the data were assessed in the context of creating a population register.
The population register represents a crucial infrastructural component of a modern statistical system. It provides a foundation for the production of reliable, regularly updated demographic data, reduces the costs associated with traditional population censuses, and enhances the effectiveness of evidence-based policy planning.
The presentation was attended by members of the inter-agency working group responsible for the implementation of the population register, who discussed the key pillars of the roadmap and the subsequent steps for the phased introduction of the population register.
The presented roadmap lays the groundwork for the introduction of a register-based population census in Georgia.
