Meeting on United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Today, on November 16, the Administration of the Government of Georgia and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations organized a meeting titled “Supporting the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations and ensuring active participation of the parties involved, the role of food and agriculture in achieving the SDGs.” 
The parties discussed the important issues such as FAO’s role in the SDG implementation/monitoring, the activities of the Government of Georgia and UN organizations towards adopting the SDG goals and objectives at the national level, the significance of the NGOs and a private sector engaged in the process. 
Ms. Maia Guntsadze, Deputy Executive Director of the National Statistics Office of Georgia, attended the meeting. Ms. Guntsadze introduced the role of Geostat in implementing and monitoring the SDG indicators, data accessibility, needs and methodology to the participants. She stated that the SDG implementation is an important challenge for the country, including the aspects of public administration in economic, social and environmental fields. Data and indicators of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development set the significant challenges to the countries, implementing institutions and statistical system and dealing with these challenges is possible by improving/perfecting the coordination at the national level, modernizing the system and strengthening the capabilities. Due to the fact that the challenges are complicated, statistical institutions have to work together with the partner and international organizations on methodology and practical implementation. It should be noted that SDGs are the opportunity for accelerating the development of statistical system. 
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, which is the organizer of the meeting held at Tbilisi Marriott Hotel, is implementing a project in Georgia. This project aims at strengthening the process of implementing and monitoring SDG in the agricultural sector.
