Development of Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP)

Date: 21 May 2021

National Statistics Office of Georgia continues cooperation with Statistics Denmark within the framework of the EU twinning project.

Over the last month, several international experts' meetings took place within the project.

The meetings were held online and aimed to evaluate the work done regarding the development of Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) in Georgia and prepare a plan for the implementation of the index.

The HICP indicator is mainly used by the EU member states and is the most important indicator for price stability. It is based on a unified, harmonized methodology. The successful introduction of this indicator in Georgia is of high importance in terms of approximation with the EU standards.

Price statistics Department of Geostat started to work on this direction, with the guidance of Danish experts, in October 2020. Significant changes have been made in respect of data classification and processing, as well as calculation of the index. The results achieved by Geostat, including the HICP test data, were highly rated during the mission. In addition, the recommendations have been worked out for further development of the indicator. As a result, the Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices will be published in Georgia from 2022.
