Population census will be conducted by the end of 2024

Date: 6 June 2022

The first session of the Government Coordination Commission on the Population Census was held in the Government Administration, under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister of Georgia.

At the meeting, the National Statistics Office of Georgia (GEOSTAT) submitted to the Commission the 2024 census program for approval, which includes the basic principles of the census, methodological and organizational issues.

According to the program, the date of the next population census is defined by the Government Coordination Commission at the end of 2024.

The census will provide up-to-date information on population size, age and sex structure, employment, education, health status and household composition.

According to the decision of the Government Coordination Commission, along with the population census, an agricultural census will be conducted, as a result of which, along with social and demographic data, information will be collected on the agricultural activity of households.

The Government Coordination Commission on the Population Census was established by the resolution of the Government of Georgia and consists of heads of state agencies and representatives of international organizations. The last population census in the country was conducted in 2014.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council adopted a resolution on June 10, 2015, requiring member states to conduct at least one census in the 2020 World Round of Population and Housing Census, taking into account international and regional recommendations. The 2020-2024 World Round of the Population and Housing Census is defined as the period 2015-2024.
