GEOSTAT Representatives Participate in UN Meeting

Date: 28 November 2025

GEOSTAT’s Executive Director, Gogita Todradze, is taking part in a meeting of the Expert Group on Population and Migration Statistics, held by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) from 26 to 28 November in Geneva.

The meeting features panel discussions on population and housing censuses. Participants are reviewing the experiences of different countries in conducting censuses and using the latest technologies for collecting migration data.

During the meeting, GEOSTAT’s management briefed attendees on the population and agricultural census carried out in Georgia in 2024. They spoke about the methods used for data collection, the activities undertaken within the census, and the innovations introduced by GEOSTAT.

This annual meeting brings together over 100 representatives from around 55 countries. It is attended by officials from national statistical offices, international organisations, experts, and senior decision-makers. The platform plays an important role in sharing experiences on population censuses and migration statistics, assessing progress achieved, and ensuring alignment with UN recommendations.

Alongside the Executive Director, the meeting is also attended by GEOSTAT’s Deputy Executive Director, Paata Shavishvili, and the Head of the Population and Demographic Statistics Department, Aleksandre Arabuli.

Georgia’s population and agricultural census was conducted in November-December 2024. For the first time in the history of national censuses, GEOSTAT carried it out using modern technologies – self-registration and tablet devices – without paper questionnaires.

The preliminary results of the census were published in June this year, while the final, detailed data will be released in June 2026.
