Eurostat expert visits Geostat within the framework of the International Comparison Programme

Date: 29 May 2026

On May 28-29 2026, an Eurostat expert paid a working visit to the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat). The purpose of the visit was to assess the work carried out by Geostat within the framework of the International Comparison Programme (ICP), as well as to conduct a regular review of compliance with European Union methodologies and statistical standards.

In previous years, Georgia participated in the 2017 and 2021 rounds of the ICP through its involvement in the Eurostat-OECD Working Group. Within the framework of the programme, Geostat ensures the implementation of various surveys and the preparation of databases in accordance with European Union requirements. The principal objective of the ICP is to compare the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of participating countries on the basis of Purchasing Power Parities (PPPs).

Since 2024, Geostat has participated in the activities of this program with financial support from GOPA. Acting as a contractor to Eurostat, GOPA is responsible for coordinating the implementation of these activities in Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.

The agenda of the current visit focused on activities to be carried out in 2025-2026. The expert from Eurostat and representatives of the Price Statistics Department of Geostat reviewed Georgia’s progress towards full integration into the regular cycle of the International Comparison Programme.

The International Comparison Programme is implemented under the auspices of the World Bank and involves around 200 countries worldwide. Georgia’s participation in the Programme is of particular importance in the context of its ongoing harmonisation process with European Union standards.
