The Executive Director of Geostat, Mr. Gogita Todradze is participating in the meeting of the Group of Experts on Statistics on Population and Migration, organised by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva from 21 to 25 September.
The main theme of the meeting is the World Round of Population Censuses for the 2030 Census Round. Participants are discussing the use of modern technologies and innovative methods for the collection of data on population and migration statistics.
During the meeting, Mr. Todradze delivered a presentation on the methodology to be used for Georgia’s forthcoming population census. He noted that the next census is planned to make use of population registers and administrative data, an approach that is becoming increasingly widespread internationally. This methodology offers an opportunity to optimise the resources required to conduct the census while also reducing the burden on respondents.
In addition to delivering his presentation, the Executive Director of Geostat actively participated in the discussions held as part of the meeting and chaired one of the sessions.
Mr. Gogita Todradze also shared Georgia’s experience in conducting the 2024 Population and Agricultural Census. He presented the data collection methods used, the preparatory work carried out, and the innovations introduced by Geostat. The census was conducted in November and December 2024. For the first time in the history of population censuses in Georgia, Geostat conducted the census using modern technologies, including self-enumeration and tablet computers. The final census results were published in June 2026.
The Group of Experts on Statistics on Population and Migration meets annually and brings together more than 100 representatives from around 55 countries, including representatives of national statistical offices and international organisations, experts and senior officials. The meeting serves as an important platform for countries to exchange experience and expertise in the fields of population censuses and migration statistics.
The Geostat delegation also includes Deputy Executive Director Mr. Paata Shavishvili and Mr. Aleksandre Arabuli, Head of the Department of Population and Demographic Statistics.
